Professional Standards
Professional standards for teaching in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) include a range of competencies that ensure effective, culturally responsive, and pedagogically sound language instruction. These standards often encompass understanding second language acquisition theories, creating inclusive learning environments, planning and delivering engaging lessons, assessing students' language proficiency, integrating technology, and engaging in continuous professional development. A key aspect of these standards is also fostering a supportive and respectful classroom environment, where diverse linguistic backgrounds are acknowledged, and learners are encouraged to communicate confidently.
In my own education and work experience, I have deployed these TESOL professional standards across various aspects of my teaching. The documents below outline various professional standards I have been involved with. Take a look!
